M'Chigeeng First Nation Project, Manitoulin Island
**** WIND FARM UNDER CONSTRUCTION
****
First M'Chigeeng Wind Energy Project Newsletter
The M'Chigeeng
First Nation are 100% owners of a community scale wind
energy project on
their lands on Manitoulin Island. This project was awarded
a Feed In Tariff contract for 4 MW of generation on
April 22, 2010 and a Notice t Proceed was issued by the
Ontario Power Authority on March 15, 2011.
M'Chigeeng is proud to be making
history in Ontario as the first aboriginal developer of
a commercial scale wind farm and 3G Energy is proud of
our contribution as wind farm consultant over the last 5
years . It has been a rewarding
relationship for us all and a mutual learning
experience.
All aspects of
environmental permitting have been accomplished under
the Canadian Environmental Act and the
project is in the construction planning stage.
Completion is anticipated for October 2011. A
financing offer by the TD Canada Trust has been accepted
and a turbine supply agreement with Enercon has also
been been executed.
The project is situated on a prominent
ridge on the east shore of West Bay, facing Lake Huron
on the west. The wind resource is among the strongest in
Ontario owing to the height above lake level of the
ridge as well as the exposure to the dominant westerly
and northerly winds.
A future Phase II is contemplated on
another parcel of Band-owned land nearby, on a lower
ridge location situated shore-side on Lake Huron. This
is likely a project for the next decade.
Final Screening
Report
Helimax/Garrad Hassan was hired to manage the
environmental assessment activities. The approved
environmental screening report is registered on the
federal environmental registry and it is available for
